What does a flashing check engine light mean?

A flashing light can accompany an engine misfire, where combustion is not occurring as expected. Continued operation can damage other components, including the catalytic converter. It does not tell you which part caused the problem.

Describe whether the car shook at idle, lost power or ran roughly before you stopped. Do not drive or rev the engine to recreate the symptom. If the light flashed and then stopped, that history still matters; a symptom disappearing is not proof the fault is repaired.

What if the check engine light is steady?

A steady light also needs diagnosis, even when the vehicle seems to run normally. The warning can have different causes and severities. Check the owner’s manual for your exact warning; an oil-pressure or temperature warning is a different situation.

A webpage cannot clear a vehicle for driving. Mention any rough running, overheating, unusual noise or loss of power when you call. If the car’s operation changes or the light starts flashing, stop when safe and get help.
